What is 21 Tara Praise?

A specific practice or a famous mantra, "Praise to the 21 Tara." We see and practice twenty-one Tara each with different names, colors, and attributes. But why is it twenty-one specifically, one might wonder? Khenchen Palden Sherab and Khenpo Tsewang Dongyol answer this question in their book. The book "Tara's Enlightened Activity" is widely acclaimed.

The Early Practice of 21 Tara

Buddha Shakyamuni taught various teachings on Tara in the categories of outer tantra, inner tantra, and the Great Perfection at the third turning of the Wheel of Dharma (or dzogpa chenpo). The Twenty-one Praises to Tara, in particular, were extremely famous in India.

In the ninth century, they were brought to Tibet by Guru Padmasambhava King Trisong Deutsen and teacher Santaraksita. King Trisong Deutsen and wisdom Dakini Yeshe Tsogyal, an emanation of Tara, were among Guru Padmasambhava heart pupils who received numerous Tara teachings. During the following few centuries, Tara became one of Tibetan Buddhism's most famous and powerful deities. Tibetan Buddhism's Nyingma, or "early translation tradition." Both karma and termas lineages evolved from Tara's practice.

21 Sutra Knots

The sutra system remains similar to Vajrayana or Tantra. But its methodology is more precisely targeted. This tantric teaching preaches that we have twenty-one knots in our bodies. They obstruct or block our channels as they tend to come in pairs. It requires practice, but we can release these knots. With each release of a couple of knots comes a specific experience or realization. Removing all the twenty-one knots makes us enlightened beings. It makes us worthy of Buddhahood.

About Green Tara

Green Tara, the Swift Liberator, sits on a lotus since Tara is said to have originated from Avalokiteshvara compassionate tears. Her right hand is in the boon-granting mudra, implying that she can give creatures their wishes. The left hand is in offering refuge, with her thumb and ring finger squeezed together to represent the conjoined practice of method and knowledge. And the three remaining fingers lifted to represent the Three Jewels of Refuge-Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Tara, the embodiment of enlightened activity, holds the stem of a blue Utpala flower in each hand, symbolizing that Tara is the mother of the past, present, and future buddhas.

"OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA"

What is meaning of Green Tara mantra?

Om tare tuttare ture soha meaning "I prostrate to the Liberator, Mother of All the Victorious Ones." To clarify the meaning of tare tuttare ture, consider the following: The word tare means "to be free of samsara."

Tare demonstrates how Mother Tara frees living creatures from samsara or genuine sorrow. This is comparable to human afflictions such as birth, old age, disease, and death; encountering unwanted items and feeling aversion; not finding desirable objects or discovering them but not being satisfied.

Tuttare, the second word, frees you from the eight anxieties. Eight anxieties are associated with extrinsic threats such as fire, water, air, earth, thieves, and hazardous animals.

The third word, Ture, is a word that frees you from illness. Now, among the Four Noble Truths, ture depicts the ultimate cessation of suffering.

The last term, Soha, signifies creating the path's root within your heart. In other words, when you take shelter in Tara and practice Tara, you get Tara's benefits in your own heart. This allows you to establish the root of the route in your heart, symbolized as tare tuttare ture.

Green Tara Mantra Benefits

Whoever recites this twice, thrice, or seven times

And desires a son will have a son,

Or desiring wealth will gain such wealth.

One's all wishes will be obtained,

And no obstacles will arise. Everything is destroyed.

Suppose a person who desires to obtain offspring, wealth, or any other such desirable thing recites this mantra of the praises and homages of Tara twice, three times, or seven times with devout faith. In that case, all such desires will be accomplished as wished and without hindrance.

21 Emanations of Tara

Each 21 Tara is equally important in the prayer and Praises to the 21Tara. The following are the individual aspects of each of the 21 Tara:

1. Pravira Tara: Tara Swift and Heroic

Out of emptiness appear a Dharmodaya, where OM is in the center on a yellow lotus and moon. She is Tara the Heroine, red and radiating masses of fire. She has one face and eight arms, and the first pair of hands joined at the crown hold vajra and bell. At the same time, the second pair holds a bow and arrow, the third has the wheel and conch, and the fourth contains a sword and noose.

2, Candrakanti Tara: Tara White as Autumn Moon

On a lotus and moon appears White Tara. She has three faces and 12 arms. Her first pair of hands are in the peaceful gesture, and the other right hand holds khatvanga, wheel, jewel, vajra, and a garland of flowers—the other left-hand holds water-jug, bell, flask, and book. The lord is Amitabha.

3. Kankavarna Tara: Golden Colored Tara

Yellow Tara appears on a lotus and moon with one face and ten arms. Her right hands hold the rosary, sword, arrow, vajra, and staff, and her left hands hold silk ribbon, noose, lotus, bell, and bow. The lord is Ratnasambhava.

4. Ushnishavijaya Tara: Tara the Victorious Ushnisha

Yellow Tara appears with one face and four arms. Her right hand in the wish-granting gesture and holding a rosary, her left hand has a water jug and club. The lord is Amoghasiddhi.

5. Humsvaranadini Tara: Tara Proclaiming the Sound of HUM

Tara is on the lotus seat. Her right hand gives protection, and her left-hand holds a yellow lotus. The lord is Amitabha.

6. Trailokyavijaya Tara: Tara Victorious over the Three Worlds

Red Tara appears on a red lotus and sun. She has one face and four arms. Her right hands hold a vajra and sword, and her left hands are in a threatening gesture and hold a noose. The lord is Amitabha.

7. Vadipramardani Tara: Tara Crushing Adversaries

Black Tara appears on a yellow lotus and sun. She has one face and four arms. Her right-hand holds the wheel and sword, and her left hands, in a threatening gesture, hold a lotus with vajra upon it. The lord is Ratnasambhava.

8. Vasitottamada Tara: Tara Who Bestows Supreme Powers

Yellow Tara appears stacked on a seat of red lotus, moon, and sea monster. She has one face and four arms. Her first pair of hands hold a branch of an Ashoka tree and a lotus, while the other team holds a jewel with the wish-granting gesture and a flask. The lord is Amogasiddhi.

9. Varada Tara

Red Tara appears on a red lotus and moon with four arms. The first pair of hands hold vajra and bell, and the second right is snapping fingers, while the second left has the branch of an Ashoka tree. The lord is Amogasiddhi.

10. Sokavinodana Tara: Tara Dispeller of Misery

Red Tara is on a red lotus and moon with four arms. The first pair of hands are on the crown of the head while the second pair holds a sword and the branch of an Ashoka tree. The lord is Amogasiddhi.

11. Jagadakarsana Tara: Tara Summoner of Beings

Black Tara appears in a lotus and sun seat. Her right-hand holds a hook that summons the eight planets, and her left has a hook that dispels misfortune. The lord of the type is Ratnasambhava.

12. Mangalavabhasa Tara

Yellow Tara appears on a double lotus and moon. She has one face and eight arms. The right hands hold a trident, hook, vajra, and sword, whereas the left hands hold a jewel at heart, hook, club, and flask. The lord is Vairochana.

13. Paripacana Tara: Tara the Ripener

Red Tara appears on a lotus and sun. Her first right-hand holds a sword, and the second one has an arrow. Her first left hand holds a wheel, and the second one a bow. The lord of the type is Amitabha.

14. Caladbhrkuti Tara: Frown Shaking Tara

Blue Tara appears on an orange lotus, sun, and human corpse seat. She has three faces, black, white, and red. She has six arms; her right hands hold a sword, hook, and club, the left ones the skull, noose, and Brahma's heads. The lord is Amogasiddhi.

15. Mahasanti Tara: Tara the Greatly Peaceful

White Tara appears on a white lotus. The three right hands hold a rosary and club, whereas the other three left hands hold a lotus, water jug, and book. The lord with her is Amitabha.

16. Sanganasani Tara: Tara the Destroyer of Attachment

Red Tara appears on an orange lotus and son. Her right hand holds a trident at her heart. The left one, with forefinger raised, is a tree with blossoms and fruit. The lord of the type is Akshobhya.

17. Sukhasiddhi Tara: Tara, the Accomplisher of Bliss

 Tara appears on a white lotus seated on a sun seat. Her two hands held the orb of the moon at her heart. The lord with her is Amogasiddhi.

18. Prapusti Tara: Tara the All-Increasing

White Tara appears on a white lotus with moon and goose and has four arms. The first pair of hands are joined at the crown and hold hooks, and the second pair hold a lotus with a book. The lord of the type is Amitabha.

19. Duhkadahana Tara: Tara Burner of Suffering

White Tara appears on a white lotus and moon. Her two hands hold a furnace at heart. The lord of the type is Vairochana.

20.Siddhisambhava Tara: Tara Source of Attainments

Orange Tara appears on a red lotus and moon. Her two hands hold a golden flask at heart. The lord of the type is Amogasiddhi.

21. Paripurana Tara: Tara the Perfecter

White Tara appears on a lotus. She has three eyes, a slightly wrathful face. Her right-hand holds a trident and the left one contains a pearl garland. The lord with her is Ratnasambhava.

21 praises to Tara

"Whoever is endowed with devotion for the goddess and recites this with supreme faith,

Remembering it at dawn upon waking and in the evenings,

Will be granted all fearlessness, will perfectly pacify all negativities,

And will eliminate all unfortunate migrations.

The multitudes of conquerors will quickly grant initiation:

Thus, endowed with this greatness, one will eventually reach the state of a buddha.

If affected by the most terrible poison,

Whether ingested, drunk, or from a living being,

Just by remembering, will one be thoroughly cleansed.

If this prayer is recited two, three, or seven times,

It will alleviate all the sufferings of torments

They are caused by spirits, fevers, and poisons, and by other beings as well.

If you wish for a child, you will get a child;

If you want to for wealth, you will receive wealth.

All your wishes will be fulfilled

And all obstacles pacified."
