Dhyani Buddha Amitabha sits atop a moon disc lotus seat with his legs crossed and hands holding a begging bowl in this statue. Amitabha is also known as Amitayus, the great savior Buddha, in Mahayana Buddhism, particularly among the Pure Land sects. Amitabha was never as well-known as a savior figure in Tibet and Nepal as in East Asia, but he is respected as one of the five "self-born" buddhas (Dhyani-buddhas) who have existed for a long time.
