According to Buddhist scriptures, Shakyamuni was born at Lumbini Gardens in what is now Rummindei, Nepal. My mother died on the seventh day after his birth, and Mahprajpat, her younger sister, reared him. He has claimed to have excelled in both learning and martial arts during his childhood and adolescence. Despite being nurtured in the luxury of the royal palace, he appears to have become acutely aware of and deeply bothered by the problem of human misery.
