1000-Armed Chenrezig: The Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion
Background and Significance
In Tibetan Buddhism, Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara) is the embodiment of infinite compassion and is identified by the 1000-Armed Chenrezig. Chenrezig is of extreme importance among both Mahayana and Vajrayana practices and he is understood to have taken a vow to never rest until all sentient beings are free from suffering. When Chenrezig comprehended the vastness of suffering, he was so overcome by grieving for all sentient beings that he came apart. Amitabha Buddha blessed him, and in doing so, Chenrezig was reconstituted, with a thousand arms and eleven heads. In this way, Chenrezig's limitlessness is evident in his expansive ability to see and alleviate the suffering of all beings.
Every hand of Chenrezig has an eye, demonstrating that he sees all and is prepared to act without hesitation. His arms extend in all directions to aid every sentient being in the ten directions of space.
1000-Armed Chenrezig is one of the commonly practiced Vajrayana deities. Chenrezig is frequently featured in meditations based on compassion. Chenrezig's mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, is chanted to awaken one's innate bodhicitta, the mind of awakening for the benefit of all beings.
Attributes and Iconography
1000-Armed Chenrezig is generally depicted in a beautiful and peaceful version, embodying the aspect of divine compassion. His primary pair of hands are prayerfully positioned at the heart, holding a wish-fulfilling jewel (cintamani). The rest of his arms integrate symmetrically with each hand holding sacred implements or mudras representing distinct tantric embodiments.
-
Eleven Heads: His eleven heads, stacking atop each other, signify an infinite awareness. The first head is almost always as an Amitabha Buddha, the spiritual teacher and higher self of Chenrezig.
-
Thousand Arms: The reach of his thousand arms is to relieve suffering, and each hand has an eye for awakened awareness.
-
Peaceful Expression: With all this detail, the face of Chenrezig is one of ultimate peacefulness, reflecting the ultimate nature of karuṇā (compassion).
Some images depict Chenrezig in heavenly silks, bodhisattva ornaments, and a crown representing a Buddha statue of Amitabha. Each of these iconographic symbols denotes a state of enlightenment and a vow to stay in samsara until all beings are liberated.
Associated Practices and Mantra Recitation
The Thousand-Armed Chenrezig sadhana is commonly practiced in Tibetan Buddhism, and especially during group retreats or Nyung-né fasting retreats focused on generating compassion and purifying negative karma. Practitioners visualize Chenrezig in his thousand-armed form, surrounded by an aura of light, while sending countless blessings to the world.
His six-syllable mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, is one of the most well-known and popular recited mantras. It is believed that the mantra purifies the six realms of existence and helps awaken the heart’s own natural capacity for unconditional love and compassion.
The great masters tell us,
"To recite Om Mani Padme Hum, even just once, is the same as reciting all the teachings of the Buddha".
Through visualization and mantra recitation, practitioners are bringing themselves into alignment with Chenrezig’s vow until, step by step, they are able to cultivate the same compassion through their thoughts, speech, and actions.
Statue Description: Sacred Craftsmanship at Its Finest
Our 1000-Armed Chenrezig statues are made with ritual-grade accuracy so that these are not only objects of art, but appropriate for ritual and altar use. These statues are made by artisan sculptors in the Himalayas, who have captured Chenrezig's many characteristics from the serene expression of his complicity with the depicted expression of serenity in each of his eleven faces, to the beautiful display pattern of his thousand arms outstretched.
Each statue is made with a high-quality copper alloy although many are plated with 24k gold, and painted using mineral pigments that are hand-mixed, to accentuate the characterisation of the face, both in the elements of headdress or crown, and to capture the symbolic aspects: so of the "vehicles" and implements in the hands, as appropriate. The craftsmanship allows for both iconographic propriety and a devotional intention behind the statue, so the practitioner can cultivate their concentricity with the statue in their meditative state.
Whether in a home shrine, in community temples, or retreat centres, the statues emit calmness and compassion, creating spaces in the home, temple, and centres of loving-kindness dedicated to doing no ill and spreading love where possible.
