Dorje Phagmo: The Fierce Protector and Goddess of Compassion

Dorje Phagmo is a great god of Tibetan Buddhism, who is also considered to be an ugly protector and the embodiment of wisdom and compassion.  According to the Vajrayana tradition, people consider her one of the most crucial female deities. Dorje Phagmo is generally depicted as a vicious and enraged being to demonstrate her protective purpose and power to eliminate ignorance and evil powers.

• Appearance:  Her face, her teeth, her crown of skulls on her head, testify that she is capable not only of death and destruction.  Her frightening appearance demonstrates that it is her duty to remove issues and negative moods.
•  Multiple Arms: Dorje phagmo can be depicted with several arms, each grasping a different symbolic item such as a sword, a bell, or a vajra.  These facts indicate that she is capable of cutting ignorance, hitting bad forces, and making people stay afloat on their religious journey.
•  Body and Skin: Her body is mostly depicted as dark or red, which symbolizes her power and strength.  The dark color is a symbol of her capability to absorb bad energy and transform it into wisdom and goodness.
•  Seated Posture: She is seated many times in a meditative or active posture, demonstrating both knowledge and activity.  She is ready to defend herself and act against issues to protect herself as depicted in her posture.

• Dorje Phagmo is the embodiment of personal change who walks beside the practitioners in their spiritual adventure, and through their times of need, she grants them stamina, valour, and protection.

Dorje Phagmo is one of the main figures in Tibetan Buddhism, mainly in the Vajrayana and Nyingma schools, and she is considered both the protector and the teacher. With her being a powerful female god, she represents the main feminine sides of the teachings, proving that in both sexes, compassion and wisdom are present. People who worship her ask her for help through rituals, which means that they use her mantras and visualizations for protection, healing, and spiritual transformation, thus removing obstacles and purifying negative karma, among others.
