Description

Guru Padmasambhava Statue, Tibetan Buddhist Sculpture

Guru Padmasambhava Statue seated on a lotus throne, holding a vajra (Dorje) in his right hand and a kapala in his left (Patra). In the fold of his arm, he has a tantric staff (khatvanga) topped with a trident. He's dressed in monastic robes, enormous circular rosette earrings, and a feather-topped cap with upturned lappets. His face has an energetic expression with a penetrating look, bulging wide eyes, deeply arched eyebrows, and a little bow-shaped mouth.

Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava (the Precious Teacher), is the Buddha of our time and the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. Unlike Buddha, who is most renowned for imparting the sutra vehicle's teachings, Padmasambhava came into this world, specifically Tibet, to teach the tantras. While Buddha Shakyamuni personifies the Buddha principle, which is the most significant aspect in the sutrayana route, Padmasambhava personifies the guru principle, which is at the core of Vajrayana Buddhism as the second Buddha.
