Nagakanya: The Serpent Goddess of Protection and Wisdom
Nagakanya, or the “Serpent Woman,” is viewed as a goddess of protection by the Tibetan Buddhists due to her close connections with the nakas (serpents) and the Wisdom holders. Naga beings protect secret knowledge as well as healing ability. In most Vajrayana practices, Nagakanya plays an important role in protecting practitioners and the Dharma. Nagakanya also possesses qualities of protection, healing, and preserving spiritual knowledge.
Iconography and Symbolism
Nagakanya is depicted in artwork as a graceful appearing figure with snake-like qualities, appearing with a serpent wrapped or, in some cases, as a full serpent with a snake's lower-half body. Nagakanya represents a strong connection to the naga realm and protects practitioners through her calm expression to provide nurturing as well as protective qualities. In artwork, Nagakanya may also be adorned with jewels that symbolize hidden knowledge of the naga beings.
Role in Buddhist Practice
Most people consider Nagakanya a guardian or protector, especially over sacred Buddhist teachings, wisdom, and practices. The most common call to Nagakanya is as the protector of practitioners and the Dharma from negative forces so that sacred teachings remain safe. Also, as a being from the naga realm, Nagakanya is believed to heal both physical and emotional wounds while removing negative energies.
Wisdom's Guardian: In addition, she safeguards secret knowledge handed down from the Buddha and ensures that only the pure teachings of the Buddha can be provided to aspiring students of the Buddha's teachings.
Legacy & Influence
Nagakanya plays a central role in many aspects of Tibetan Buddhist beliefs, particularly when it comes to relieving pain and creating safety. Her calm yet powerful aura provides support for energy-producing systems and assists practitioners in overcoming obstacles and retaining the integrity of the Dharma. Nagakanya continues to play a very important role in the lives of spiritual seekers and those attempting to access the innermost secrets imbued within the Buddha's teachings.
