1000 Armed Avalokiteshvara Sacred Sculpture: A Timeless Symbol of Infinite Compassion
Handcrafted in Nepal, this 1000 Armed Avalokiteshvara Sacred Sculpture measures 14.7”/37.5cm in height, with a 10.8”/27.5cm base, and weighs 2.04 kg. The sculpture is formed from a copper body, carefully modeled to create the central figure, numerous arms, multiple heads, lotus pedestal, and large ornamental aureole. The surface is finished with 24K gold gilding, covering the figure, arms, heads, aureole, pedestal, and intricate decorative patterns with a radiant golden appearance. Acrylic painting is applied to selected details including the hair, facial features, and red accents around the outer aureole, creating definition and contrast against the gilded surface. The combination of the copper body, 24K gold gilding, and detailed acrylic painting gives the sculpture its richly ornamented Himalayan appearance.
Avalokiteshvara is depicted in his eleven-headed, thousand-armed form, standing at the center of a vast circular arrangement of arms. The central pair of hands is joined before the chest in a gesture of compassion and devotion, while the surrounding arms extend outward in a symmetrical fan, representing his ability to reach out to countless beings. The hands hold various attributes, including a lotus and mala, while other hands display different symbolic gestures. Above the principal face, the additional heads are arranged in tiers, culminating in a wrathful face and the small image of Amitabha Buddha at the top. He wears an elaborate crown, earrings, necklaces, and richly patterned garments, while standing upon a lotus pedestal. The large circular aureole filled with the many arms forms the defining visual element of the sculpture, emphasizing the expansive compassionate activity represented by this form.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the Thousand-Armed Chenrezig, or Sahasrabhuja Avalokiteshvara, is a highly regarded embodiment of compassion. Each of the many limbs and heads in the illustration bears metaphorical tools that stand for different facets of kindness and deft tactics. This variation of Chenrezig represents the infinite and pervasive quality of compassion, concurrently alleviating the pain of innumerable beings. Seekers ask the Thousand-Armed Chenrezig for forgiveness, compassion, and the elimination of impediments to the spiritual path. It is said that by meditating and repeating his mantra, "Om Mani Padme Hum," one can call upon his benevolent presence and foster compassion within oneself. Across all realms, the Thousand-Armed Chenrezig is a powerful representation of compassion, providing comfort and direction to those in need.
