Chenrezig, known in Sanskrit as Avalokiteshvara, is the Bodhisattva of Compassion, revered across all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. He is considered the earthly manifestation of the self-born eternal Buddha Amitabha. His vow is to delay his own Buddhahood until all beings are freed from suffering. The specific manifestation of 1000 arms and 11 heads arose from his profound grief upon witnessing the endless suffering in the world, causing his head to split and Amitabha to reassemble him with infinite limbs and heads to help more effectively.
