Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, appears in eight sacred manifestations—each symbolizing a unique aspect of his enlightened activity. These are not separate beings but expressions of the same awakened master, appearing according to the needs of sentient beings. Guru Tsokyé Dorje reflects his miraculous lotus birth on Lake Dhanakosha. Guru Shakya Sengé embodies the monastic discipline of Buddha Shakyamuni. Guru Nyima Özer dispels darkness and tames spirits with rays of wisdom. Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Padma Jungné, is the central figure who introduced Buddhism to Tibet. Guru Loden Choksé represents his pursuit and mastery of supreme knowledge. Guru Pema Gyalpo shows his princely nature and compassionate leadership. Guru Sengé Dradrok is the fierce protector who defeats negativity, while Guru Dorje Drolö, his wrathful, tiger-riding form, subdues harmful forces and conceals sacred teachings, known as termas. Together, these eight forms embody the limitless compassion, wisdom, and power of Guru Rinpoche to benefit all beings.

The Eight Manifestations of Padmasambhava represent his ability to manifest in various ways as needed. Each manifestation embodies a different principle that reveals the essence of the mind. Guru Rinpoche emphasized that Padmasambhava is the mind itself, and no practice or meditation is needed beyond that. Padmasambhava is an enlightened Buddha who has also manifested as a great sage in the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition. He was born miraculously and served infinite beings through his wisdom and compassion. He also manifested the Zangdok Palri Pureland and remained there in a body of light. According to legend, Padmasambhava was born from a lotus in the Milk Ocean after the rays of Buddha's blessing light touched it 12 years after his passing.
