Description

Amitayus 24K Gold Gilded Copper Sculpture for Serene Meditation Spaces

Handcrafted in Nepal, this Amitayus 24K Gold Gilded Copper Sculpture measures 5.7”/14.5cm in height, with a 4.3”/11cm base, and weighs 0.5 kg. The sculpture is formed from a copper body, carefully modeled to define the seated figure, lotus pedestal, robes, crown, jewelry, and ornamental details. The surface is finished with 24K gold gilding, covering the figure, pedestal, crown, ornaments, and decorative patterns with a radiant golden appearance. Acrylic painting is applied to selected areas including the black hair, facial features, and fine decorative details, creating contrast and definition against the gilded surface. The combination of the copper body, 24K gold gilding, and acrylic painting gives the sculpture its detailed traditional appearance while preserving the finely modeled ornamentation throughout the figure.

Amitayus is depicted seated in full lotus posture upon a lotus pedestal, with his peaceful expression and composed posture reflecting his meditative form. He wears an elaborate five-pointed crown, large earrings, necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and richly decorated garments, representing his bodhisattva appearance. His two hands rest together in Dhyana Mudra at the lap, holding the distinctive longevity vase centrally before his body. The vase is the principal attribute of Amitayus and represents the nectar of longevity. His black hair is arranged in a high coiffure beneath the crown, while the lotus pedestal supports the seated figure and completes the composition. The carefully modeled crown, ornaments, meditation posture, and longevity vase clearly define this representation of Amitayus, the Buddha associated with long life.

Amitayus originates in Indian Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist traditions and later became especially important within Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism. He is revered as the Buddha of Infinite Life and represents the long-life aspect of Amitabha Buddha. His practice became closely connected with rituals and meditations for longevity, vitality, merit, and the preservation of favorable conditions for spiritual development. In Tibetan Buddhism, he is especially invoked in long-life ceremonies and practices intended to support health, extend life, and provide practitioners with more opportunity to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and realization.
