Description

Handmade Amitayus Spiritual Sculpture | Embodiment of Immortality and Wisdom

This Handmade Amitayus Spiritual Sculpture measures 9.6”/24.5cm in height with a 6.7”/17cm base and weighs 1.53 kg. Handcrafted in Nepal from an oxidized copper body, the sculpture features a naturally darkened finish that enhances the contours and finely worked surface while preserving the rich character of traditional metal craftsmanship. The controlled oxidation and precise hand-finishing reflect the skill of Nepalese artisans and the enduring traditions of Himalayan Buddhist sculpture. Spiritually, the figure is associated with longevity, vitality, wisdom, merit, and the preservation of favorable conditions for continued spiritual practice.

This Amitayus is depicted as a serene, youthful sixteen-year-old Buddha of Infinite Life, seated in the full vajra posture upon a lotus throne and moon disc. His single face has a peaceful expression with gently lowered eyes, reflecting deep meditation and tranquility. His long dark hair is gathered into an ornate crown-like topknot, with remaining tresses flowing over the shoulders. He wears an elaborate five-jeweled crown (pancharatna), representing the Five Buddha Families and Five Wisdoms, along with large earrings, layered necklaces, armlets, bracelets, waist ornaments, and flowing silk garments characteristic of his Bodhisattva form. Both hands rest together in dhyana mudra in the lap, holding the long-life vase (tsebum or kalasha), which contains amrita, the nectar of immortality. The vase is traditionally adorned with a wish-fulfilling sprout or ashoka leaves, symbolizing freedom from disease and decay. His lotus throne and moon disc provide the sacred foundation, while his youthful form, peaceful expression, long-life vase, meditation gesture, jeweled crown, silk garments, and Bodhisattva ornaments together define the distinctive iconography of Amitayus.

Amitayus originates in Indian Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist traditions and later became especially important within Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism. He is regarded as the Buddha of Infinite Life and represents the long-life aspect of Amitabha Buddha. His practice became closely connected with rituals and meditations for longevity, vitality, merit, and the preservation of favorable conditions for spiritual progress. In Tibetan Buddhism, he is especially revered in long-life practices and ceremonies intended to support health, extend life, and provide practitioners with more opportunity to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and realization.
