Atisa was a highly esteemed Buddhist master and scholar, and this statue depicts him in a serene appearance sitting on a moon disc lotus seat performing the 'Dharmachakra mudra,' a powerful symbol of the Buddha's teachings. Atisa Dipankara Shrijnana was an 11th-century religious leader from Bangladesh who became an expert in Buddhism. He was invited to Tibet, where he played a crucial role in reviving and reforming Buddhism. Atisa's teachings emphasized compassion and the aspiration to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. He introduced the Three Trainings and the Six Perfections to Tibetan Buddhism, and his influence is still felt in the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhist thought and practiced throughout Asia.
