Chenrezig, also known as Avalokiteshvara, is the embodiment of the compassion of all Buddhas. According to Buddhist tradition, when contemplating the vastness of worldly suffering, his head split into eleven pieces from grief, and his arms shattered. Amitabha Buddha restored him, granting him eleven heads and a thousand arms so that he might hear and reach out to help every crying being in the cosmos.
