Chenrezig Iconography
This exceptional four-armed manifestation embodies boundless compassion, loving-kindness, and the compassionate activity of all Buddhas. Seated gracefully in the full lotus posture (Padmasana) upon an elaborately carved lotus throne, the figure expresses meditative stability and awakened compassion. The front two hands are joined at the heart in Anjali Mudra, symbolizing devotion, compassion, and the union of wisdom and skillful means, with the wish-fulfilling jewel (mani) traditionally held between the palms. The upper right hand holds a mala, representing the continuous recitation of sacred mantras, spiritual practice, and the compassionate activity that benefits sentient beings, while the upper left hand holds the stem of a lotus, whose blossom rises beside the shoulder and symbolizes purity and the emergence of wisdom above worldly conditions. The figure is crowned with an elaborate jeweled crown featuring the image of Amitabha Buddha, identifying the connection with the Buddha of Infinite Light and the lineage of compassion. The peaceful face, gently lowered eyes, elongated earlobes, and graceful proportions convey profound serenity, while the four arms express the vast and multidirectional activity of compassion. Rich celestial garments, flowing scarves, necklaces, earrings, armlets, bracelets, waist ornaments, and anklets enhance the bodhisattva's appearance, while the richly decorated lotus throne and monumental aureole reinforce the sacred presence of the figure.
Traditional Craftsmanship and Detailing
Crafted in Patan, Nepal, using the traditional lost-wax casting technique, this sculpture features a copper body finished with 24K gold gilding, acrylic painting, and handcarved gemstones. Covered with a triple layer of 24K gold gilding and carved with deeply engraved carvings that produce a magnificent 3D-like effect, the surface displays exceptional depth and dimensionality. Fine detailing extends across the Amitabha crown, facial features, jewelry, garments, mala, lotus, and flowing scarves, with carefully handcarved gemstones adding refined color and contrast to the gilded surface. The large aureole features intricate floral and scrolling patterns with layered ornamental work, while the two-tiered lotus throne is richly carved with individual petals and decorative motifs. The combination of deep engraving, precise metalwork, gemstone setting, detailed gilding, and meticulous hand-finishing reflects the high level of craftsmanship associated with traditional Nepalese sacred sculpture.
