Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), the embodiment of infinite compassion, is typically depicted with four arms, each representing a different aspect of his enlightened being and selfless love. In his upper right hand, he holds a crystal mala, symbolizing the endless cycle of saṃsāra and the power of mantra recitation to liberate beings. His upper left hand holds a lotus, a symbol of spiritual purity and awakening beyond worldly suffering. His two main hands are positioned in Anjali Mudra (añjali mudrā) at his heart, a gesture of reverence that signifies the union of wisdom (prajñā) and compassionate action (upāya). He sits in the firm Vajra posture (vajrāsana), radiating both serenity and strength. Atop his head, an ushnisha (uśṇīṣa) signifies his enlightened state, crowned by the Five Dhyani Buddhas, representing the five wisdoms (pañca-jñāna) that illuminate the path to awakening. A deer skin drapes over his shoulders, symbolizing ahimsa (non-violence) and his gentle nature, reinforcing his role as the peaceful protector of all sentient beings.
