Liuhai is almost invariably depicted with a three-legged toad, known as chanchu or Money Toad. The toad is a legendary creature believed to have the power to spit out gold coins, symbolizing wealth and good fortune. In many depictions, Liuhai is shown standing on the toad, playing with it with a string of coins, which he uses to bait or lure the toad. This motif represents the magical ability to attract wealth and is a visual shorthand for prosperity. Liuhai is shown in a playful stance with one foot raised, emphasizing his cheerful and benevolent nature. This playful attitude reinforces his role as a bringer of joy and abundance.
