Simhamukha, meaning "Lion-faced," is a wrathful wisdom dakini in Tibetan Buddhism, especially within the Dzogchen and Nyingma traditions. She is portrayed with the head of a snow lion, often open-mouthed and roaring, symbolizing the fierce and joyful dispelling of discursive thoughts and obstacles. Naked and wild, she embodies complete freedom from conceptual limitations and defiles. Regarded as an emanation of Guhyajnana Dakini or Mandarava (consorts of Padmasambhava), she is a powerful meditational deity whose primary function is to avert magical attacks and remove obstacles, including evil spirits and curses. Simhamukha's fierce appearance—complete with skull crown, curved knife, and scorpion necklace—reflects her role as a protector and remover of all hindrances, both internal and external. She is often depicted standing or dancing, surrounded by a flaming aureole, radiating the forceful energy of enlightened wisdom (prajñā) overpowering ignorance. Her lion face signifies regal power and fearlessness, while her form is red in color, symbolizing passion and defilements transformed into the supreme wisdom of the awakened.
