Description

Invite Abundance and Serenity with a Sacred Dzambhala Sculpture for Altar

This Dzambhala Sculpture for Altar measures 17.1”/43.5cm in height with a 14.0”/35.5cm base and weighs 8.47 kg. The sculpture is crafted from a copper body, which forms the detailed structure of Dzambhala, his ornaments, garments, lotus pedestal, and surrounding decorative elements. The surface is richly finished with 24K gold gilding, emphasizing the sculpted details of the figure and giving the statue its radiant golden appearance. Acrylic painting is applied selectively to the hair, eyebrows, eyes, moustache, beard, and other fine facial and ornamental details, creating defined contrast against the gilded surface. Gemstones are set into the crown, necklaces, and jewelry, adding small points of color throughout the sculpture while complementing the gold finish.

Dzambhala is depicted as a two-armed wealth deity seated in lalitasana, with his right leg extended downward and his other leg drawn upward on the lotus pedestal. His rounded body, prominent moustache and small beard, broad face, and slightly forceful expression give him the distinctive appearance traditionally associated with Dzambhala. He wears an elaborate jeweled crown over dark hair gathered into a topknot, along with large earrings, layered necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and richly patterned garments. In his right hand, he holds a citron fruit, an auspicious symbol associated with abundance and prosperity. His left hand holds a mongoose, or nakula, whose open mouth releases a stream of jewels; a distinct pile of precious jewels is shown directly below it. The flowing celestial scarves extend outward on both sides of his body, framing his seated form. His legs rest upon an elaborately decorated lotus pedestal, while the sculpted lotus petals and ornamental scrollwork complete the lower composition. Together, the citron, jewel-emitting mongoose, jewels, richly adorned form, and regal seated posture identify this sculpture as Dzambhala, the Buddhist deity associated with wealth and abundance.

Dzambhala is widely revered in Tibetan Buddhism as a guardian deity and a manifestation of Ratnasambhava, the Buddha of the southern quarter. His practice focuses on dissolving the obstacles of scarcity and cultivating the generosity necessary for the path to enlightenment. By focusing on his enlightened form, practitioners learn to harmonize material well-being with the pursuit of higher wisdom.
