Gautama Buddha, also known as Shakyamuni Buddha, was a spiritual teacher and the founder of Buddhism who lived in the 5th to 6th century BCE. Born as Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini (in present-day Nepal), he renounced his royal life in search of the truth about suffering and the path to liberation. After years of meditation and ascetic practice, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. From then on, he became known as Buddha, which means “Awakened One” in Sanskrit. He spent the rest of his life teaching the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path to achieve nirvana—the state of freedom from suffering and the cycle of rebirth. His teachings form the foundation of Buddhism and guide millions worldwide on their spiritual journey toward wisdom, compassion, and inner peace.
