The Karmapa is depicted in the dharmachakra mudrā, symbolizing the turning of the Wheel of Dharma. From each hand rises a lotus that blooms gracefully near his shoulders—on the right, the lotus supports a sword, representing the cutting of ignorance, while on the left, the lotus holds the sacred Prajñāpāramitā scripture, embodying transcendent wisdom. He wears the distinctive Kagyu hat, adorned with a viśvavajra at its center, signifying unshakable stability, and crowned with a stūpa at the top, symbolizing ultimate enlightenment.

The Karmapas are the successive heads of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, a major lineage within the Kagyu tradition. Beginning with Dusum Khyenpa, the 1st Karmapa (1110–1193), they are regarded as the first consciously recognized line of reincarnated lamas in Tibet, with each Karmapa seen as the rebirth of the previous one. Revered as emanations of Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, the Karmapas are entrusted with preserving and transmitting the profound teachings of the lineage, particularly the Mahamudra and the Six Yogas of Naropa. Known for their wisdom and compassion, they also bear the symbolic Black Crown, representing the union of enlightened qualities and the unbroken continuity of their spiritual activity throughout generations.
