Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is the historical founder of Buddhism. Born as a prince in the Shakya clan in ancient India around the 5th–4th century BCE, he renounced his royal life in search of truth and liberation from suffering. After years of ascetic practices and meditation, he attained enlightenment (bodhi) under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya and became known as Shakyamuni, meaning “the Sage of the Shakyas.”
