Tibetan Golden Wrathful Mahakala Statue | Himalayan Artwork
The Mahakala Statue stands 13.8 inches (35 cm) tall with a base width of 11 inches (28 cm) and weighs 4.70 kg. Crafted from a solid copper body, gold and acrylic paintings, and gilded in 24K gold, this two-armed form of Mahakala is the principal protector of the Karma Kagyu lineage in Tibetan Buddhism. With its detailed craftsmanship and powerful symbolic presence, this statue serves as both a sacred protector and a striking piece of spiritual art, ideal for any meditation space, altar, or collection of Vajrayana iconography.
Mahakala is powerfully depicted in a dynamic and wrathful form, holding a skull cup in his left hand and a curved knife in his right. These symbolic implements represent his ability to conquer and cut through hostile forces, both internal and external. Seated in the Alidhasana posture—with one leg bent and the other extended—he tramples upon negative evils, signifying his dominance over ignorance, ego, and all obstructive energies. His fierce expression, marked by bulging eyes and bared fangs, is surrounded by a roaring halo of flames, intensifying his formidable presence. This blazing aura not only enhances his wrathful appearance but also symbolizes the purifying power of wisdom that burns away defilements. Behind his head glows a bright halo, radiating his strong spiritual energy and divine protection. Mahakala rests upon a lotus base with a sun disc at its center, representing the blossoming of spiritual awakening and illumination. He is adorned with a five-pointed crown made of skulls, each point symbolizing the transformation of the five negative emotions—ignorance, attachment, anger, pride, and jealousy—into the five aspects of transcendent wisdom. This fearsome yet compassionate protector stands as a guardian of the Dharma, invoking both awe and reverence, and assuring practitioners of his unwavering power to shield them from spiritual and worldly harm.
