Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), the embodiment of boundless compassion, is traditionally portrayed with four arms, each symbolizing a distinct facet of his enlightened nature and altruistic intention. He holds a crystal mala in his upper right hand, representing the unending cycle of saṃsāra and the transformative power of mantra recitation. His upper left hand holds a lotus flower, a timeless emblem of spiritual purity and awakening beyond the world's suffering. His principal hands are joined at his heart in Anjali Mudra (añjali mudrā), a gesture of profound reverence that reflects the union of wisdom (prajñā) and compassionate action (upāya). He exudes a calm yet resolute presence in the firm Vajra posture (vajrāsana). An ushnisha (uśṇīṣa) crowns his head, signifying his enlightened state, and atop this, Chenrezig holds a representation of Amitabha Buddha, symbolizing infinite light and compassion. Amitabha is revered as the Buddha of Infinite Light, and his presence on Chenrezig's head highlights the deep connection between boundless compassion and the aspiration for enlightenment. Chenrezig is adorned with the Five Dhyani Buddhas, each embodying one of the five transcendent wisdoms (pañca-jñāna) illuminating the path to liberation. Draped over his shoulders is a deer skin, symbolizing ahimsa (non-violence) and his gentle, protective nature. Richly adorned with ornaments, Chenrezig radiates the spiritual nobility and beauty inherent in enlightenment.
