Description
Oxidized Copper Green Tara Sculpture | A Fine Work of Traditional Buddhist Art
This Oxidized Copper Green Tara Sculpture measures 19.8”/50.5cm in height with a 13.0”/33cm base and weighs 9.16 kg. Handcrafted in Nepal from an oxidized copper body, the sculpture features a deep, naturally darkened finish that enhances the contours and finely worked surface, while carefully placed gemstones add subtle color and decorative refinement. The controlled oxidation, substantial proportions, precise metalwork, and meticulous hand-finishing reflect the skill of Nepalese artisans and the enduring traditions of Himalayan Buddhist craftsmanship. Spiritually, the figure is associated with compassion, protection, swift assistance, courage, and the removal of obstacles.
Green Tara is depicted in the graceful posture of royal ease (lalitasana), with one leg folded inward and the other extended forward, expressing both meditative stability and readiness to assist sentient beings. Her right hand extends downward in Varada Mudra, symbolizing generosity, compassion, and the granting of blessings, while her left hand is raised near the heart, holding the stem of an utpala lotus, whose blossom rises beside her shoulder and represents purity, wisdom, and spiritual awakening. Her serene expression, gently lowered eyes, delicate facial features, and subtle smile convey peaceful awareness and compassion. She is richly adorned with an elaborate jeweled crown, large earrings, layered necklaces, armlets, bracelets, waist ornaments, and flowing celestial scarves. Her garments feature finely engraved floral and scrolling patterns, while the lotus throne beneath her is richly carved with layered petals and ornamental borders. Together, her graceful posture, compassionate hand gestures, lotus blossoms, elaborate ornaments, patterned garments, and detailed throne express Green Tara’s swift compassion, protection, fearlessness, and readiness to respond to suffering.

Green Tara originates in Indian Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist traditions and later became one of the most widely revered female deities in Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism. She is closely associated with active compassion, swift assistance, protection from fear, and the removal of obstacles. Her practice was transmitted from India into Tibet, where she became central to prayer, meditation, and devotional traditions across several Buddhist schools. Spiritually, she represents compassionate action in direct response to suffering and is often invoked for courage, protection, guidance, and support on the path toward liberation.
