Tilopa (988–1069) and Naropa (1016–1100) are two of the most revered Mahasiddhas (great adepts) in the history of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism. As the guru and disciple, their relationship forms the foundation of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Tilopa received the Mahamudra teachings directly from the Buddha Vajradhara and transmitted them to Naropa, who underwent twelve major and twelve minor trials to purify his mind before receiving the full transmission. Their story is a classic illustration of unwavering devotion and the critical importance of the guru in the Vajrayana tradition.
