Description

Traditional Handcrafted Samantabhadra Art For Dharma Decor

The Handcrafted Samantabhadra Art, composed of copper, exhibits the complex symbolism of this famous Bodhisattva of universal virtue and tremendous vows in Mahayana Buddhism. With a height of 19.3 inches (49cm) and a base of 15 inches (38cm), the statue weighs 8.70 kg.

The statue depicts Samantabhadra in a seated posture on the giant elephant, reflecting purity, wisdom, and compassion, making it a great item for spiritual places, meditation activities, or as a lovely depiction of Buddhist teachings. The god performs two different mudras, with the left hand resting on the lap in a contemplative posture and the right hand in Abhaya or Varada Mudra (protection or bestowing boons), while wearing a multi-tiered crown and intricate jewelry, symbolizing celestial rank. A nimbus behind the figure conveys divine light and sanctity, while a lotus flower close to the left arm represents purity and spiritual awakening. The elephant emphasizes the concepts of strength and endurance with exaggerated features like its tusks and curved trunk.

Samantabhadra is also a key figure in the Āvataṃsaka-sūtra, particularly the last chapter, the Gaṇḍavyūha-sūtra. In the climax of the Gaṇḍavyūha-sūtra, the student Sudhana meets Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, who teaches him that wisdom only exists for the sake of putting it into practice; and that it is only good insofar as it benefits all living beings.
