A handmade Kshitigarbha Copper Sculpture: Beacon of Earthly Compassion

This Handmade Kshitigarbha Copper Sculpture, a revered bodhisattva associated with compassion, protection, and the guidance of beings through difficult circumstances, stands at 9.45”/24cm in height and 7.68”/19.5cm at the base, weighing 1.59 kg. It is handcrafted from a copper body and richly finished with gold and acrylic painting, complemented by carefully placed gemstone embellishments. The sculpture features finely detailed carvings across the crown, jewelry, garments, sacred attributes, and lotus pedestal, while the vivid red-toned body and colorful painted elements give the figure a distinctive presence. The elaborate crown, flowing ornaments, patterned garments, and intricately decorated lotus throne demonstrate the careful craftsmanship of Himalayan artisans, making this sculpture a meaningful addition to Buddhist altars, meditation places, Dharma centers, or sacred collections.

This sacred depiction portrays Kshitigarbha in an ornate bodhisattva form, seated gracefully upon a richly decorated lotus pedestal. The figure is shown with a serene expression, elaborate jeweled crown, earrings, necklaces, arm ornaments, and flowing celestial garments, reflecting the traditional appearance of an enlightened bodhisattva. One hand is raised while holding a precious symbolic object, representing the wisdom and compassionate resources used to benefit sentient beings, while the other hand extends downward in a gesture of generosity and compassionate activity. A small Buddha image appears above the crown, emphasizing the connection with the awakened teachings. The richly patterned garments, gemstone details, curling ornamental elements beside the figure, and layered lotus throne further enhance the sacred composition. The combination of peaceful expression, graceful seated posture, elaborate ornaments, and carefully painted details reflects the devotional character of Himalayan Buddhist sculpture.

Kshitigarbha, meaning "Earth Store" or "Earth Womb," is one of the four principal Bodhisattvas in East Asian Mahayana Buddhism. He is renowned for his great vow to postpone his own Buddhahood until all hells are empty. Often depicted as a monk with a staff and a wish-fulfilling jewel, he tirelessly works to guide beings through the six realms of existence, especially those suffering in the lower realms. Kshitigarbha is also considered a protector of children and travelers, symbolizing unwavering perseverance and immense compassion.
