In Mahayana Buddhism, Samantabhadra is a bodhisattva who represents benevolence or happiness. He is frequently depicted in a triad with Shakyamuni (the Buddha) and the bodhisattva Manjushri, either on a three-headed elephant or a six-tusked elephant with towered tusks, signifying his divine status. In China, he is the patron deity of Mount Emei, located in the province of Sichuan. According to legend, he was once a monk named Dharmakara who made 48 great vows to benefit all beings before attaining enlightenment as a bodhisattva. In Chinese, he is known as Puxian, while in Japanese, he is known as Fugen.
