Description

A Masterwork of Devotion Embodying Timeless Peace and Himalayan Craftsmanship

This Himalayan Shakyamuni Buddha Sculpture measures 12.2”/31cm in height and 9.6”/24.5cm at the base, weighing 3.69 kg. Crafted from a copper body, this refined Himalayan Buddhist sculpture is finished with 24K gold gilding and detailed acrylic painting. The figure is seated in vajra posture upon an elaborately carved double-lotus pedestal, with a serene facial expression, gently lowered gaze, elongated earlobes, tightly curled hair, and a clearly defined ushnisha. The monastic robe is richly ornamented with finely rendered floral and scroll patterns, extending across the shoulder, torso, and legs. Intricate detailing can be seen throughout the robe borders, facial features, hands, lotus petals, and pedestal, while the luminous 24K gold surface enhances the depth of the sculptural work. The carefully modeled proportions and richly decorated robe give this sculpture a distinguished presence while preserving the calm and contemplative character of traditional Himalayan Buddhist art.

This statue features Shakyamuni Buddha in the bhumisparsha mudra, with the right hand extending downward toward the earth while the left hand rests in the lap holding an alms bowl. The earth-touching gesture recalls the moment of awakening beneath the Bodhi tree, when the Buddha called the earth to witness his realization. The alms bowl represents the disciplined monastic life and the practice of receiving sustenance while following the Dharma. His peaceful expression and meditative posture convey concentration, inner stillness, and awakened awareness, while the ushnisha represents his profound spiritual realization. The elongated earlobes recall his former life of royal privilege and subsequent renunciation, while the simple monastic form distinguishes him from elaborately adorned Bodhisattvas and tantric deities. The lotus pedestal symbolizes purity and liberation, representing the emergence of awakened wisdom above the conditions of ordinary existence. Together, these elements express the Buddha’s enlightenment, wisdom, compassion, and the path of liberation taught through the Dharma.

Siddhartha Gautama, known as Shakyamuni Buddha, was the historical founder of Buddhism. Born in ancient Nepal, he renounced his princely life to seek enlightenment. Through profound meditation and self-discovery, he attained perfect wisdom, or Buddhahood, under the Bodhi tree. He then dedicated the remainder of his life to teaching the Dharma, or the path to liberation from suffering, to all who would listen.
