The statue is carved from copper and adorned with jewels, paints, and 24K gold gilding. The statue is Western-style, symbolizing Maitreya's willingness to come down when the time is right. He holds either a stupa, symbolizing Buddha's relics, or a vase of immortality, symbolizing his capacity to grant longevity and spiritual prosperity.
