Manjushri originated as one of the most revered Bodhisattvas of Mahayana Buddhism, first appearing in early Mahayana scriptures such as the Prajnaparamita texts. In Nepalese tradition, he is especially connected with the Kathmandu Valley, where legends describe him as the figure who opened the valley by cutting the gorge at Chovar with his wisdom sword, allowing the sacred lake waters to flow out.
