Its copper body is enriched with radiant 24K gold gilding and carefully applied acrylic painting, creating a warm golden appearance with contrasting painted details. Tsokye Dorje, meaning “Lake-Born Vajra,” recalls Padmasambhava’s miraculous appearance upon a lotus in the lake of Dhanakosha. The vajra held in his right hand expresses indestructible awakened awareness, while the skull cup in his left is associated with tantric realization and the transformation of ordinary perception. A khatvanga staff rises beside his left shoulder, completing his recognizable appearance and expressing the union of wisdom and skillful means. The lotus seat evokes purity arising amid worldly conditions, connecting the sculpture’s form with the account of his extraordinary birth.
