Sakya Mahākāla is depicted with a fierce expression and three eyes, symbolising his vision of past, present, and future, and wears a five-skull crown representing the transformation of the five poisons into the five wisdoms. Both hands are joined at his chest, holding a kartikā (ritual flaying knife) in the right and a kapāla (skull cup) in the left, with a ritual staff (khaṭvāṅga) resting between them. He is adorned with a serpent necklace, emphasising his wrathful power. He is seated upon a sun disc and lotus base, encircled by a radiant halo of flames that manifests his fierce protective energy, burning away obstacles and ignorance.
