Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, was the historical founder of Buddhism. He was born in ancient India around the 5th–6th century BCE as a prince in the Shakya clan. Despite his royal life, he renounced worldly comforts to seek the cause of human suffering. After years of meditation and ascetic practice under the Bodhi tree, he attained enlightenment (Bodhi) and became the Buddha, which means “the Awakened One.”
