Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Gautama Buddha, was a historical figure and the founder of Buddhism. Born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini (modern-day Nepal) around the 5th–4th century BCE, he renounced royal life in search of the truth about human suffering. After years of meditation and ascetic practice, he attained enlightenment (bodhi) under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, becoming the “Awakened One” (Shakyamuni, meaning “Sage of the Shakya clan”).
