Traditional Shakyamuni Altar Sculpture | A Refined Expression of Buddhist Heritage

This Traditional Shakyamuni Altar Sculpture measures 13.3”/34cm in height with a 9.4”/24cm base and weighs 4.44 kg. Handcrafted in Nepal from a copper body, the sculpture is finished with 24K gold gilding and detailed acrylic painting that bring luminosity, warmth, and definition to the carefully worked surface. The balanced proportions, precise metalwork, and meticulous hand-finishing reflect the skill of Nepalese artisans and the enduring traditions of Himalayan Buddhist craftsmanship. Spiritually, the figure represents the historical Buddha and the path of awakening through meditation, wisdom, ethical discipline, and liberation from suffering.

Shakyamuni Buddha is depicted in a serene meditative form, representing wisdom, enlightenment, compassion, and liberation from suffering. Seated in the full lotus posture upon a lotus throne, he embodies perfect meditative stability and awakened realization. His right hand extends downward in Bhumisparsha Mudra, touching the earth as a witness to his enlightenment and victory over Mara, while his left hand rests in Dhyana Mudra, traditionally holding the alms bowl and symbolizing meditation, renunciation, and spiritual nourishment. His peaceful expression, gently lowered eyes, urna, elongated earlobes, and ushnisha reflect the traditional marks of Buddhahood. The monastic robe is carefully draped across the body, with finely defined folds and engraved decorative patterns, emphasizing simplicity and discipline. The richly carved lotus throne features layered petals and intricate ornamental detailing, symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening. Together, the earth-touching gesture, meditation bowl, serene expression, monastic robes, and lotus throne express Shakyamuni Buddha’s complete awakening, wisdom, compassion, and freedom from worldly attachment.

Shakyamuni Buddha, born as Siddhartha Gautama, is the historical founder of Buddhism and is traditionally believed to have been born in Lumbini, present-day Nepal, around the 5th century BCE. Born into the Shakya clan, he later renounced princely life in search of freedom from suffering and attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in present-day India. He then spent many years teaching across northern India, sharing the Dharma and establishing the principles that became the foundation of Buddhism. Spiritually, he represents awakening, wisdom, meditation, ethical discipline, and liberation from suffering.
