The Karmapa is considered the spiritual leader of the Karma Kagyu school, one of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The title Karmapa was first held by Düsum Khyenpa (1110–1193), who was recognized as the first Karmapa by Gampopa, one of the key founders of the Kagyu lineage. The Karmapa is known for his role in transmitting and preserving the teachings of Mahamudra and the Six Yogas of Naropa within the Kagyu lineage. He is also regarded as the embodiment of the compassionate bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig) in the form of a guru.
