Machig Labdron is depicted as the enlightened female master who founded the Chöd tradition, embodying wisdom, compassion, and the fearless cutting through of ego-clinging. She is often portrayed in a graceful dancing posture, symbolizing her liberated awareness and mastery over attachment and fear. In her right hand she holds a damaru (ritual drum), representing the sound of emptiness and awakening, while in her left she carries a bell that signifies transcendent wisdom. Machig Labdron (1031–1129) was a remarkable 11th-century Tibetan yogini and teacher, renowned for founding the unique Chöd practice. A direct emanation of Yum Chenmo (Prajnaparamita), she taught the severance of ego-clinging and fear, guiding practitioners to confront and transform inner demons into allies on the path to enlightenment. Her teachings emphasize the emptiness of the self and the importance of compassionate action.
