Awaken Courage and Inner Peace with the Tibetan Protector Marici Sculpture
Handcrafted in Nepal, this Tibetan Protector Marici Sculpture measures 23.6”/60cm in height, with a 14.1”/36cm base, and weighs 12.2 kg. The sculpture is constructed from a copper body, carefully shaped to form Marici, her chariot, the seven pigs, lotus pedestal, ornamental frame, and intricate decorative elements. The surface is finished with 24K gold gilding, which covers the figure, chariot, pedestal, and ornamental details with a radiant golden appearance. Acrylic painting is applied to selected areas including the face, hair, garments, and decorative elements, adding definition and contrast to the gilded surface. Gemstones are set into the crown, jewelry, and surrounding ornaments, providing colorful accents throughout the sculpture. Together, the copper body, 24K gold gilding, acrylic painting, and gemstone detailing create the richly ornamented appearance of this traditional Marici sculpture.
Marici is depicted with three faces and eight arms, seated upon an elaborate chariot drawn by seven pigs, one of her defining iconographic forms. Her central face is serene, while the additional faces extend to either side, emphasizing her multifaceted form. The eight arms spread around her body and hold the traditional attributes associated with this form, including the vajra, hook, arrow, needle, ashoka branch, bow, thread, and wrathful gesture. She wears an elaborate jeweled crown, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, armlets, and richly decorated garments. The seven pigs pulling the chariot are clearly arranged beneath her, while the large ornamental aureole behind the deity frames her figure and reinforces the radiant character of Marici. The parasol positioned above her completes the elevated ceremonial composition. Marici's association with the light of dawn and the removal of obstacles is expressed through this distinctive chariot-riding form.
