Tilopa is depicted as a great Indian Mahasiddha and primordial master of Mahamudra, embodying the direct realization of mind’s true nature beyond conceptual elaboration. He is often shown in a simple yogic posture, sometimes seated on a deer skin or rock, symbolizing complete renunciation of worldly concerns and mastery over attachment. His relaxed and unassuming appearance reflects the spontaneous nature of awakened awareness, free from intellectual fabrication and dualistic grasping. In his hands, he may hold symbolic objects such as a fish or sesame oil press (in traditional stories), representing the extraction of essence from experience and the transformation of ordinary perception into wisdom. His serene expression conveys effortless realization, pointing directly to the nature of mind as luminous, empty, and unconditioned. This sacred form serves as a profound reminder of the Mahamudra path, where enlightenment is recognized not through effort alone, but through direct introduction and experiential awareness.

Tilopa (988–1069 CE) was an Indian tantric practitioner and mahasiddha who is revered as the founder of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He received four special transmissions from various deities and masters, which he later passed on to his principal disciple, Naropa. Tilopa is renowned for codifying the Mahamudra teachings, emphasizing direct realization and the natural state of mind, which forms the core of many tantric practices.
