Vajrasattva represents the primordial purity of the enlightened mind. Holding the vajra (thunderbolt) to his heart, he symbolizes skillful means, while the ghanta (bell) at his hip represents wisdom. Together, these attributes signify the union of compassion and emptiness, essential aspects of the path to enlightenment. Meditating upon his form is a powerful practice for purifying negative karma and obscurations, allowing practitioners to reveal the mind’s innate, stainless nature and cultivate spiritual clarity.

In Vajrayana Buddhism, Vajrasattva is the archetypal Buddha of purification. His practice, particularly centered around the recitation of his hundred-syllable mantra, is a fundamental preliminary practice (ngöndro) for clearing karmic obstacles. Vajrasattva is venerated as the embodiment of the sambhogakāya, or the 'enjoyment body' of a Buddha, representing purity—the essence from which all enlightened qualities arise. His practice is believed to purify the mind and remove the obscurations that prevent spiritual progress.
