Vajrasattva originated within the Mahayana Buddhist tradition and later became especially important in Vajrayana Buddhism. His name means “Vajra Being,” referring to the indestructible purity and awakened nature of the mind. Early references appear in Indian Buddhist tantric literature, where he is closely associated with Vajradhara and the transmission of esoteric teachings. As Vajrayana Buddhism spread from India to Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and other Himalayan regions, his practice became central to purification and preparation for advanced meditation. In Tibetan Buddhism, Vajrasattva is especially connected with the hundred-syllable mantra and the preliminary practices known as ngöndro.
