Vajrayogini Himalayan Buddhist Art: Radiant Wisdom, Fierce Compassion
This Chinnamunda Vajrayogini Sculpture measures 46.85”/119cm in height and 31.69”/80.5cm at the base, weighing 43.5 kg. This monumental Himalayan Buddhist sculpture is handcrafted from a copper body and richly finished with gold, detailed acrylic painting, and carefully placed gemstones. The figure is presented in a dynamic standing posture, surrounded by a large flame aureole and an inner ring of intricately rendered skulls. Her red body is adorned with elaborate bone ornaments, a garland of severed heads, jewelry, and finely detailed ritual elements. The extensive carving across the figure, ornaments, flames, skulls, and lotus pedestal demonstrates remarkable craftsmanship, while vibrant acrylic painting and gold detailing create a striking and richly layered appearance. Carefully placed gemstones add further refinement to the ornamental details, making this an exceptional centerpiece for a Vajrayana shrine, meditation hall, Dharma center, monastery, or sacred collection.
This sacred representation portrays Chinnamunda, the self-decapitated form of Vajrayogini, whose unusual imagery carries profound tantric symbolism. She is traditionally depicted holding her own severed head in one hand and a curved flaying knife, or kartika, in the other. Three streams of blood emerge from her severed neck, with one flowing into her own mouth while the other two nourish her attendants, Mekhala and Kanakhala, expressing the circulation of life force, inner heat, and non-dual bliss nectar. Her fierce, smiling, or blissful expression contrasts with the dramatic nature of her form and reflects the transformative character of tantric practice. Her bone ornaments and garland of severed heads emphasize impermanence and the transformation of ordinary attachments. The act of self-decapitation symbolically represents the cutting through of ego, conceptual thought, and dualistic perception, while her tantric practice is associated with transforming the Three Poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance into the Three Wisdoms. In advanced Vajrayana completion-stage and Chöd practices, Chinnamunda represents the fearless cutting away of ego-clinging and the transformation of profound inner energies into awakened wisdom.
