Virupa is revered as one of the great Mahasiddhas of Indian Buddhism and a principal source of the Lamdre teachings of the Sakya tradition. He is typically depicted seated in a relaxed royal posture, symbolizing his mastery over both worldly and spiritual realms. His most distinctive iconographic gesture is the raised right hand, commemorating the famous miracle in which he halted the movement of the sun, demonstrating his profound realization and spiritual power. In his left hand, he often holds a skull cup or rests it in a gesture of meditative ease, signifying the transformation of ordinary perception into enlightened wisdom. Adorned with the attire of a tantric yogi and bearing a calm yet commanding expression, Virupa embodies the union of deep meditative attainment, fearless insight, and compassionate activity. His image serves as an inspiration for practitioners seeking liberation through the direct realization of ultimate truth.
