Dorje Phagmo, also known as Vajravarahi, is a wrathful female deity in Vajrayana Buddhism who embodies fierce compassion and the transformative power of wisdom. She is depicted with a vivid red body, symbolizing the blazing energy of inner heat (tummo) and the transformation of passion into enlightened awareness. She stands in a dynamic dancing posture, with her right leg raised and left leg pressing down on an evil force, signifying the subjugation of ignorance and ego. Her right hand holds a flaying knife (kṛittikā), representing her ability to cut through delusions and ego-clinging. At the same time, her left arm cradles a skull cup (kapala), symbolizing the transformation of ordinary experiences into wisdom nectar. Resting against her left shoulder is a ritual staff (khatvanga) adorned with a triple vajra and topped with three skulls, signifying the indestructible nature of enlightened body, speech, and mind, as well as the transcendence of the three times—past, present, and future. She wears a crown of five skulls, representing the purification of the five mental poisons into the five wisdoms. A garland of skulls hangs from her neck, and she is surrounded by a flaming halo filled with skull motifs, emphasizing her wrathful nature and fearless engagement with the truths of impermanence and death. Her three eyes symbolize her ability to perceive the past, present, and future with awakened clarity, and her nude form expresses her complete freedom from attachment, illusion, and conceptual limitations.

Dorje Phagmo, also known as Samding Dorje Phagmo, is the highest female incarnation in Tibet and ranks as the third highest figure in the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy after the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama. The lineage began in the 15th century with Chökyi Drönma, a princess who renounced her royal life to become a Buddhist nun and was recognized as an emanation of the fierce wisdom deity Vajravārāhī (Vajrayogini). Dorje Phagmo is a living tulku lineage and a divine figure embodying enlightened feminine power, acting as a protector of the Dharma and a spiritual leader. She is traditionally the abbess of Samding Monastery, unique for being led by a woman and housing monks and nuns. Throughout history, she has been revered for her spiritual powers, including legendary feats protecting her monastery from invaders. Dorje Phagmo symbolizes the union of wisdom and compassion, often depicted with wrathful iconography and associated with tantric practices, serving as an ultimate refuge for practitioners and deities alike.
