His four arms each carry sacred ritual implements, symbolizing his enlightened activities:
- Sword (Right Hand): Cuts through ignorance, delusion, and harmful attachments with the sharpness of transcendent wisdom.
- Kartika (Right Hand): The crescent-shaped ritual knife severs ego, negative emotions, and all obstacles on the spiritual path.
- Trident (Left Hand): Represents mastery over the three poisons—ignorance, attachment, and aversion—transforming them into enlightened wisdom.
- Skull Cup (Left Hand): Symbolizes the transformation of negative karma and afflictive emotions into the nectar of wisdom and spiritual realization.
Mahakala is seated upon a sun disc lotus base, representing the union of purity and enlightened wisdom. His third eye signifies omniscient awareness, perceiving the past, present, and future simultaneously.
His body is adorned with golden ornaments and sacred serpents, symbolizing mastery over primal energies and complete fearlessness. Behind him rises a magnificent radiant halo richly decorated with intricate floral carvings and crowned by Makara, the mythical guardian creatures that symbolize protection and the overcoming of obstacles.
