Bodhisattva Chenrezig, also known as Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, is the embodiment of boundless compassion in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Regarded as one of the most revered figures in Tibetan Buddhism, Chenrezig is believed to hear the cries of all beings and respond with unconditional mercy, guiding them toward liberation from suffering. Often depicted with multiple arms and eyes, he symbolizes his ability to reach out to countless sentient beings and perceive their suffering. Chenrezig embodies the bodhisattva ideal of postponing final enlightenment until all beings are freed from suffering. He is invoked in prayers and mantras, such as the Om Mani Padme Hum, to cultivate compassion and loving-kindness in practitioners’ hearts and to call upon his divine assistance in overcoming suffering and challenges.
