Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is the historical founder of Buddhism. The name Shakyamuni means “Sage of the Shakya clan,” referring to his royal lineage in ancient India (modern-day Nepal and northern India). Born as a prince in Lumbini around the 5th to 6th century BCE, Siddhartha renounced his life of luxury to seek answers to the universal problems of suffering, aging, and death. After years of intense meditation and asceticism, he attained enlightenment (bodhi) under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya and became the Buddha, meaning “the Awakened One.”
